Tin Nichos - Shrines - Reliquaries - Altars

art supplies, tin nichos, altered art

Tin nichos are an altered artist's perfect stage for images, words, and memorabilia. These shrines, sometimes called reliquaries - commonly metal or wooden receptacles containing relics or sacred objects- were often designed in shapes that reflected the nature of their contents, such as buildings, boxes, hearts, hands, angels, and crosses. They may be self-standing, wall hung, or even worn as necklaces, and are meant principally to serve as personal devotional altars. They incorporate small religious printed images, statuettes, medals, medallions, photos, locks of hair of a loved one and other objects of personal significance. These can be fairly simple or quite ornate. They are typically, richly decorated with gold, silver, enamel, and jewels.

Our nichos are made by the hands of Mexican artisans. Mexican Folk Art is rooted in the basic need to nurture a creative spirit passing spiritual and cultural tales from the previous generations. Typically, folk art is made by hand with simple, crude, materials and tools by people, who, without the benefit of formal art training, weave their unique stories without words. The messages they leave for the next generation is their legacy.

What is the legacy that YOU will leave? Something to ponder.
